Learning through play

LEARNING THROUGH PLAY
As a childcare provider, we must meet the criteria of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), which is defined by the Department for Education. This means following a structure of learning, development and care for children aged up to five years old.
We are wholeheartedly committed to the EYFS, ensuring that:
• Children learn through play
• We work closely with all parents
• We keep you up-to-date on your child’s progress
• We meet the welfare, learning and all-round development needs of children with different backgrounds and levels of ability, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.

To help children reach their full potential, we deliver the EYFS curriculum of learning through play and planned activities.
The three prime areas are:
• Communication and Language
• Physical Development
• Personal, Social and Emotional

The four specific areas are:
• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding of the World
• Expressive art and design

Outdoor Play
Here at Filey Childcare we are very lucky to have a large outdoor space. This enables us to offer all areas of learning outside as well as inside.
Our outdoor area also offers a mud kitchen, a climbing frame and balance bikes.
All the children within the nursery can access the same outdoor provision, which enables them to mix with all ages and learn from others. The baby area is fenced off for their protection however they are still able to see the others and interact over the small picket fence.
We also have sheltered areas so that if the weather is really dangerous we are still able to access outside, plus we have wetsuits and wellies to give access in al weathers.

Observation and assessment
Every student can learn. Just not on the same day and not in the same way – George Evans
We use the keyperson system to enable us to observe, assess and plan for each child’s individual needs and development.
A keyperson is a staff member that will oversee the development and learning of your child. This staff member will aim to know your child inside and out. They will take time to understand their learning style, their personality and their family.
We use an online learning journal for our observations. You will get signed up to this as soon as you start nursery. The keyperson will then post photos and observations on there for you to see, you can also add family members onto this (even Aunty in Australia can see what they’ve done at nursery).
Staff then link these to the EYFS and can plan activities to progress your child’s learning, tailored to their specific journey.

Parent Partnerships
We believe that parents and carers are the primary educators of their children and should be centrally involved in their child's experiences and development.
We realise that it is imperative we gain the trust and confidence of you, the parent. We aim to build a relationship with the family, not just the child.
We welcome parental contributions (this would include all significant people involved with your child) and we encourage parents to add photos and observations to their child’s tapestry.
Effective communication means there is a two way flow of information, knowledge and expertise between parents and staff.
Every interaction with you is based on a caring, professional relationship and respectful acknowledgement of the feelings of you as parents and those of your children.
